Standing In The Way Of Progress

When the motorcar was first introduced to the roads, a man would walk in front of the noisy machine waving flags to alert people to the presence of the vehicle which could reach speeds of only 5 mph. Some people said it would never come to take the place of the horse. 100 years later these ideas seem ridiculous to us, who are so dependent on cars.

The modern city-goer can't rely on cars alone and this is where bikes, scooters, longboards and roller blades have come to the fore and found their place within our cityscapes. The invention of the Segway self balanace board brought a new dynamic to this argument and now in what I see as its ultimate incarnation the hoverboard we may have just stumbled upon the next big development in transport.

That is if governments and legislative forces don't intervene. The hoverboard has been banned from the street of the UK after only a few months. With one group of cheeky social experimenters testing out the new law already. What we can learn from incidents like this, is that modern citydwellers want something like the hoverboard.

Unlike a bike, in which you have to look for parking, worry about it getting stolen and wear ridiculous clothing, with the hoverboard you can hope on outside your door, ride to work than pick up your transportation and store it under your desk. It is the new wave of transport.

For the UK Government to stand in its way seems crazy and like a knee-jerk reaction to something new. I think that over the next few months we will see restrictions put into place but a ban being lifted. Hoverboard 'cycle paths' will begin to pop up and as more and more people get their hands on this new technology and it becomes cheaper and more reliable they will eventually fit into the life of the city as much as cars, buses and bikes are intergrated today.

Modern technology has allowed us to choose what music we listen to, what shows we watch with greater ease than ever before. Hoverboards add to this, allowing the people to choose how they wish to transport themselves to work. I for one will be looking into getting one soon.
