Greensky Bluegrass is a nationally touring act from Kalamazoo, Michigan. I first learned of them at early Hoxeyville Music Festivals, and have been a huge fan ever since. I have seen them countless times over the last ten years, and always dreamed of doing graphic design for them. I was given the opportunity in 2014, when they asked me to create a Summer Tour shirt. Our relationship has grown over the last two years, and I was asked to redesign their website as well as promotional tour posters and live recording covers.
The new Greensky Bluegrass site is a visual explosion of tour life, oddities, the road, the band, life and death. The site uses some very tactile elements that I felt truly described the band from my viewpoint as thier designer and long-time fan.
A statement in a local Michigan review of the band called them the most punk rock bluegrass band. The overall feeling of my design was heavily influenced by these words. The design uses a combination of vintage elements, hand drawn illustrations, paper textures and collage. Visually the collages have mutant moments and tense balance issues. Greensky's music often speaks to those mutant, unbalanced moments in life and reminds us that ultimately, we are all in it together and going through similar things.
The collage kit has also been applied to a live DVD cover (coming soon), Fall 2015 Tour announcements, their live releases, e-newsletters and more.
