Syfy Re-Brand project

Syfy channel re-brand brief, with animatic to show how the extended version would look. The idea is that the general ident would be the shorter version, to act as a reminder of the longer piece which could be shown occasionally. This fictional re-brand is set in 2009, when the Sci-Fi channel became Syfy. The narrative of the longer ident follows the personification of Syfy as she upgrades herself from the Sci-Fi channel to Syfy, separating herself from the generic term Sci-Fi, and taking on a more personal name for herself. In the end she gets to explore new ground while watching the old symbol of the Sci-Fi channel disappear on the horizon.

In this re-brand, I was looking for a middle ground between the Sci-Fi fans who hated the original rebrand, as they felt they had lost their connection with the channel, and the reasons for the re-branding, to recreate Syfy as a brand in its own right, as opposed to the generic term Sci-Fi. To help sci-fi fans relate better to the new brand, I pieced together scenes from classic Sci-Fi films, to tell a new narrative unrelated to those films.

Referenced in the animatic are:
The Terminator,
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978)
Star Trek
The Quiet Earth

Further concept could be to create several different animations with the same message, borrowing scenes from other Sci-Fi movies, using the music (Massive Attack’s Angel) to tie them together.
