At sunset, when the weather conditions permit, few meters before the river Simeto* meets the sea, a small group of fishermen get on their own boat, prepare slowly the fishing lines and nets and take the sea route. They return only in the dark, no lights in sight and perhaps with some catches that season after season become less and less frequent.

Fishermen’s boats are typically made of wood, modest but they know they can do it with what they have.
Before the departure I tried to chat with the fisherman but it’s considered a virtue not to talk unnecessarily at sea.

 
* The Simeto is a 70 miles long river in Sicily, southern Italy. It is the second longest river on the island but the most important in terms of watershed and for the population of the nearby areas. All of its course is included in the province of Catania.
