Low Life Tombstone Poster

Tombstone Poster

The first part is a typeface designed based on a chapter from the book Low Life by Luc Sante. Low life is about the dark, dirty history of New York City. My chapter was drift, about the homeless of NYC. The typeface is based on hobo symbols and iconography. Hobos would draw these symbols to notify others of potential dangers, people willing to help, free food, etc. Each letter is based on an actual hobo icon.

The second part of the project was an epitaph poster based on a character from the chapter, using the previously designed typeface. I chose James Eads How, a man born into money who lived his life as a hobo, and used his riches to help the homeless and migrant workers. For this poster I made a reverse etching of the letter, and each graphic element of the poster is taken from a dollar bill. This entire poster was made using a photocopier, no computers or scanners needed.
