Evergreen Cemetery

Many early prominent Los Angeles families and family members are buried in this cemetery. In particular the two following images are of the Obelisk for the Lankershims and Van Nuys. Both families were early pioneers and land owners in Los Angeles. The Lankershims have a large Boulevard named after them and the Van Nuys have a city named after them.
Boyle Heights was also home to a large Japanese population in the first half of the 20th century. Most if not all of that population was removed during World War 2 and placed in internment camps. Most families that had once called Boyle Heights home did not return. 
 
There are various Japanese graves at Evergreen, including memorials to the Issei Pioneers and the 442nd Infantry, one of the most decorated units in World War 2. These graves are here not only because of the strong Japanese roots, but because Evergreen was also one of the few cemeteries that did not bar based on race.
