I was inspired by my recent trip to Vienna’s Applied Art Museum (Museum für Angewandte Kunst or MAK) for this collection. I wanted to put something used in normal life in a fine art like setting. My goal was to challenge the way we view art and its subject matter. I wanted to place these bæsts into our everyday lives, similar to how they are in the countries and regions that tell their stories. After reading the stories of these bæsts I decided that beer labels would be a good match for this unique topic since each bæst has a specific feeling or story surrounding it, much like the beers we drink. I wanted to bring the bæsts out of the “gray area” that we view them as being in and into the world of things that are black and white, to give them a real world grounding. What better way to do that than with something physical that people can actually interact with?
