While watching the 2016 NBA playoffs, I was struck by the fact that the Golden State Warriors used the typeface, Copperplate Gothic, as their main typeface on the court and uniforms. Without revealing what I think about that…
This got me thinking. Could I take some of my favorite players when I was a kid and re-imagine their uniforms using only classic type? The parameters I gave myself were 1) Only use one typeface per jersey, 2) stick to 2 colors(mostly), and 3) Make no modifications other then kerning, etc. (curves, imagery, etc.)
What started as a fun idea became an experiment in visual brand equity. Understanding the essence of each teams brand, what makes it unique and recognizable, was an enjoyable and fascinating exercise.
