Hasbro Board Game Challenge

The Hasbro Board Game Challenge is a worldwide competition that invites participants to create board games. Participants must follow a set of guidelines, i.e., making a physical product that allows 2-8 players to play.

My favorite types of board games involve strategy and interpersonal skills, so I wanted to build a game that would engage players in private strategic thinking and public "propaganda". I was inspired by the classic game of Risk to create a territory-expansion and war-time type of game. I created twists in the game that allows players to create alliances and declare intended policies, but also betray their allies and deviate from their policies.

Now on to the fun part: the visual and physical design of the game!

Branding: I was inspired by military themes and wanted a vintage feel. I chose a distressed font for the title and created a weathered, singed box to hold all the material.

Graphic Design: I used thenounproject.com to find icons. The bomb and tank images have Creative Commons Licenses. I used a map that is also has a CC license, and added a few more borders to it.

Physical Product: I used CorelDRAW to design my pieces and used a laser printer to print them out. I created a box with jagged joints and individual player pieces. I used spray paint to color the player pieces.

I tested my game out on my roommates and made some slight edits to the rules to make for faster gameplay. I presented my final product at the 2016 Harvard Science and Engineering Fair.

All in all, I had a great time making a fun game that will last for years to come!
