ONE
Graduation Project
"ONE" is a graduation project when I was an art student in GWU.  Being a Chinese, I have always had special connections with ceramics and drink-wares. Since I was a kid, I’ve seen so many traditional, iconic, classical items and designs, that I started to wonder if there is another way to interpret this material that have been part of human life for ages. And that’s why I decided to start a ceramic based work to project my four years of undergraduate life in a western country and also my root as an oriented, by exploring possibilities between creative materials and clay.

The name “ONE” came from the ancient Chinese saying “九九归一” meaning everything goes back to the original point eventually which is what Chinese people believe the “ONE.”

In this project I used a universal shape of cylinder so that form wouldn’t be distracting viewers from what I was trying to speak, that is materials. In nine identical cylinders, I used orange peel, wire, wood veneer, plaster, thread, fabric and rubber to garnish the bottom. Besides that, there are two cylinders with no additional decoration placed first and end, implying the idea of “original,” or as I was stating above, the “ONE.”
