The art of Japanese flower arrangement

Ikebana is a creative expression with specific rules in regards to construction. It derives from the bond of intimacy to nature that is intertwined through Japanese culture. It is where nature and humanity are brought together.

Ikebana responds to traditional Japanese design and the culture of Zen philosophy. The principle of wabi-sabi explores the impermanence and imperfection in our environment. It generates an appreciation for the transient beauty in the physical world. Nature has no pre-conceived rules and the forms are defined through circumstance.

This was a project for a second year Massey University Industrial design paper called, 'Koha: In the style of..'. The brief asked us to explore the principles of moulding and casting through the design and batch-manufacture of 6 fully functional vessels.
