From Corridor to Rooms

The project itself may seems site-less, after its generic form and composition, because this youth housing typology is designed to be implemented anywhere. The heterogeneous spatial experience along the interior corridors is the main idea that was brought over from the surrounding congested context. Street markets and pedestrian street network can be found nearby which generate a lot of energy and serves as a vivid social hub. The design hopes to bring in similar spatial quality that gives rise to such activation of linear circulation space.

How circulation space is included in the private extents and broke down into individual rooms that behave as intermediate layer/barrier for the house and the public space.
The site, Prince Edward district, is located in one of the most densely populated area in Hong Kong.  There was once an historical nullah penetrating through the urban grid.  The residue space, left after the removal of the nullah, was chosen as the site.  The design occupies the two largest pockets of land and is divided by the elevated highway in the middle.  Its gesture bends and negotiate with the two defining yet obstructing urban grids.
Typical Floor Plans

The shared space within residential units are being highlighted in dark concrete color.  The repetition of these darkened expanded hubs of communal space can be seen in both single loaded (northern block) and double loaded (southern block) corridor typologies.  The density of building increases from the least area of footprint touching the datum all the way to the top floor.
The building can be conceived as a whole mass with the corridor carving out as voids.  It can also be seen in a composition of two types of residential modules putting in similar arrangement in both sites.
