Weingart — Interactive Biography

The inside cover of the main book. The book itself is actually composed of two smaller books — the main narrative, which covers Weingart's professional life, his education at the school in Basel, and his later design works — and a smaller "prelude" book, nestled in the enormously thick cover of the main book, which details his personal background, childhood, and the influences which led him to his interest in extreme experimentation with design and typography.
Some of the main book's inside spreads. Though it is not apparent in these digital spreads, each page is actually cut into 2-4 smaller segments. These segments can be flipped independently of the rest of their page, allowing segments to be swapped and interchanged somewhat similarly to one of those "make your own monster" children's books. The idea behind this was to emulate Weingart's creative process of unending play and experimentation. Readers can arrange page segments together in dozens of different ways, allowing them to effectively experiment with and create their own page compositions within the book.
Additional interior spreads. Aside from acting as a metaphorical motif, the segmented pages also force the reader to stay engaged with the text. The book is literally unreadable if the user attempts to simply read it front to back like they would with any normal piece of literature. Instead, the text is broken up into chunks that jump between various page segments. In order to read it, the reader must interchange the segments so that the color-coded dots at the beginning and end of each text chunk line up vertically down the page with their corresponding colors. The beginning and end of each chapter are signified by solid bars of color, but other than that the reader must constantly experiment with different combinations of pages in order to read the text, further emphasizing Weingart's overall creative process.
