Cup and Holder. -2016-
In my first year of university I had to create an object with a purpose. The object had to be created from 2 materials and had to somehow combine together. My inspiration came from cups and holders. Usually if you was to buy a cup of coffee from a cafe, you would be given a cardboard cup with a sleeve attached to it, so that your hands wouldn't be burnt. However I approached this in a new way, creating something similar to this, just not in cardboard. I ruled out wanting to produce a cup with a handle and explored the route to create a wooden sleeve for the ceramic object. This became practice, yet contemporary. The cup was created using the slip casting technique, and the wooden sleeve was created from a block of hardwood and turned on the wood turning lathe. To follow on by making it contemporary, I added simplistic transfer patterns around the edge of the cup. Even though i completed the objective, I had however given my "cup and holder" idea an audience for mostly women, due to the pattern which was transfered on the surface
