Cameo and Caricature Project

Character Development and Storytelling: Cameo and Caricature
INTRODUCTION:

The objective of this assignment was to explore new avenues of Adobe Creative Cloud while establishing a clear workflow demonstrating the skills obtained. The intension of this project was to build the fundamental skills that will be used in every lesson in order to successfully create effective work in Digital Storytelling class at George Brown College. We began our character developments by using iPads, stylists, and Adobe Illustrate Draw(and its parent application -Adobe Illustrator CC). While recording the steps used in our creative process, we were then to document everything on Behance.

MATERIALS:

HARDWARE
SOFTWARE: Illustrator Draw, Illustrator CC, Photoshop
PLATFORM: CC, Behance

CREATIVE PROCESS:
For the cameo assignment, I decided to keep things rather traditional. While taking a picture, I made sure my posture was straight, facial expression were few-none, and all angles were facing forward. When it came to the illustration portion in Adobe Draw, I tried to highlight all my features without being over-detailed. I mainly used one pen tool, the felt tip end and varied its width with pressure to create unified harmony throughout.

On the other hand, the caricature was less traditional. First of all, the subject matter was a peer in my class instead of myself this time. The objective of this specific assignment was to illustrate this person and their personality through caricature designs. After an interview with my peer, he expressed that dancing was one of his interests. Therefore, I decided that I would create his character as if he was dancing and I thought adding more features like a stereo and music notes would further establish the illustrations purpose.
WORKFLOW: CAMEO
step 1
The first step was to take a profile image of myself.
step 2
The next step was to upload the picture to Adobe Draw.
step 3
Then using the circle tool, I manipulated it's form into a oval and outlined the portion I desired to work with - the head and shoulders.
step 4
And then drawing finally begins! Using the stylist, I began to trace my profile, varying between different pens (mainly used the felt tip marker) and width to enhance my physical characteristics.
step 5
Then after outlining the figure, in one single path I then held my finger on the background which then automatically filled itself black.
step 6
Then, I uploaded the cameo to through the CC to the desktop version of Adobe Illustrator and simplified all the paths and the curve perspective to my liking.
step 7
Then for extra detailing, I added a border, changing its colour and form, overall adding more character to the cameo.
step 8
Final result.
WORKFLOW: CARICATURE
step 1
First step was to take a picture of the subjects face.
step 2
Then, asking my partner how he wanted to be represented, he decided that dancing was the best way. Therefore, I took another picture and I asked him to 'strike a pose' so that I had something to reference in Adobe Draw.
step 3
After I received all the information I needed I uploaded both images into
Adobe Draw - specifically starting with the body as it is the smaller portion of the drawing.
step 4
Then I started to draw the head, initially enlarging it to enhance the Caricature's purpose.
step 5
The final results. I decided to add personal detailing like a stereo and music notes to clearly illustrate his interests.
CONCLUSION
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed working with Adobe Draw. Initially I found it difficult to navigate because I have never used the app before but after working with Adobe Sketch last semester I quickly adjusted. What I found difficult was to create accurate and straight lines with or without the Stylus. I spent a lot of time zooming in and cleaning up lines that were not as sharp as others. Also, the fact that the Creative Cloud has made it effortless to share work between all platforms was extremely efficient and I saved a lot of time in doing so. The Creative Cloud made things easier to sync and collaborate with others opposed to emailing and USBs. Furthermore, I learned how to work with both projects in Photoshop and Illustrator on the desktop version and how to perfect them (i.e. closing all open paths and rendering them to perfection). To conclude, I then created this page to illustrate all the steps I took in order to create my Cameo and Caricature designs.
