Geometric Self Portrait

This is a geometric portrait I created using adobe Illustrator for my digital Illustration class. The assignment required us to us illustrators pen tool to create multiple shapes over the top of a picture and then add color that was present in the original photo. For my photo, I chose to use my Facebook profile picture which had a heavy contrast of light and dark.

For this project I first chose my photo then I went into illustrator and began tracing over the darkest areas creating abstract shapes. After finishing the darkest area I moved to the highlights and began tracing over them and finally I traced all the mid-tone parts of the photo. After getting my outline complete I used the live paint tool to grab color from the original photo to fill the geometric shapes with. Once the photo was colorized I added a blue and white radial gradient to the background to finish off the piece.

While I have become quite comfortable with illustrator from previous classes this project gave me a better understanding of how specific illustrator tools such as live paint tool worked. Another major thing this project taught me was patients. This project took quite a bit of time and was something that couldn't be rushed if I wanted my end result to turn out detailed and even though the pen tool could get a little frustrating at times there seemed to be something therapeutic to the process of creating the outlines. All in all this project was a lot of fun to work on and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.
