As part of our multimedia imaging module, we were tasked with creating a brand around a campaign or company. As a group, we chose to focus on mental health issues.

On average, 1 in 4 young people in Ireland experience a mental health issue.

It has been proven that early intervention is the most effective way to reduce the risk of many of the serious side effects that can occur as a result of untreated mental illnesses such as addiction, suicide, or incarceration.

Mental health is something that affects many people and it is important to continue to highlight its prevalence within society and to continually circulate campaigns surrounding this topic.

By utilising a relatable concept like comic book superheroes, we hoped to portray people with mental illnesses as strong and resilient , as there is strength in coping with such difficulties. We wanted to emphasis that it is okay to be vulnerable.

We used pop art, comic book inspired portraits that have a torn page effect across them to reveal the real, black and white portrait beneath. By this we intend to empower people with mental illness in their ability to triumph over their obstacles, portray these people in a strong and positive light that contradicts common negative stereotypes and show that ‘it’s braver to be yourself than a superhero’.

Looking at other mental health campaigns we felt we wanted to move away from the negative connotations they present and put a more positive spin on the concept.

We wanted to achieve this while keeping our target audience in mind by incorporating a positive concept, bright colours and a focus on social media.

As greenribbon.ie is the National Stigma Reduction Partnership and has 90 partner organisations, we decided to run this mock campaign with them acting as our client.
