LECCI CABLE TIDY - retractable headphone tidy [2011]

The Lecci Cable Tidy was our attempt to make a retro-fit retractable cable tidy for headphones. Trying to make a mechanism that can be fitted to a range of cables with varying lengths, diameters, materials, and thicknesses is quite a complex task. We were also keen to make the product ratcheted so that the cable didn't have to be extended all the way before it could be used. To help us with the mechanism design we used Joe Wentworth, a freelance design engineer.
Once we'd created a working prototype, we were able to discuss the project with potential manufacturers. Tooling was another important stage as many of the features had critical dimensions to ensure the spring release was smooth and consistent. We didn't want the mechanism damaging the cables of expensive headphones.
Packaging was created to match the existing Lecci style guide.
