The objective was to make the website as inviting and comforting as a roadside diner during a long road trip. The website and all the advertising created (the website was a part of a massive rebranding initiative we created for this client that was underscored by the tag line "go places") had to appeal to a very broad audience—from the hardworking GMC truck buyer to the upscale Buick buyer.
We wanted people to be excited and surprised when they visited the website—like the anticipation you feel when you take a road trip. We incorporated many interactive elements of fun that encouraged people to get in their vehicles and "go places". For example:
A ROAD TRIP ITINERARY
We featured seasonal promotions. For example we created a Go North promotion for the summer, which was a road trip to the North Shore. When people clicked on the travel diary on the homepage it took them to the Lupient Faceboook page where we created a custom Go North application with many fun graphic bits of information including where to stay according to price, things to do along the way and interesting factoids about this area.
RADIO:
We featured staff picks of their favorite traveling tunes that linked to a Lupient iTunes store. When they hovered their mouse over the radio the dial moved back and forth and static sounded.
COFFEE CUP:
If customers registered their email address, they were awarded a Caribou Coffee coupon for a free cup-o-Joe. And if they tried to register for the coupon more than once, the coffee cup would spill. Steam from the coffee cup hovered over the page.
COMPASS:
When the user put his mouse over the compass and clicked on it the needle would move and then a pop up window with a cross promotion appeared telling them to, for example, "go north" to Hackenmueller's Meat Market. If they mentioned "go places" to the butcher, they would get a pound of beef jerky for half off.
