Book Design ISTD 'Flowlines'

Flowlines was designed an an ISTD publication, honouring and celebrating the work of
the local craft maker. The title refers to the flow state experienced by the craft makers
and the flow lines that are part of the process of patchwork and quilting. Typographic representations, although challenging, opened up a world of design possibilities and the love of all things 'Baskerville'! There were many parallels in the book binding process.
An image 'block' was made for the cover design and the term 'blocks' are used in the craft of patchwork. Fabric was the obvious cover choice and thanks to 'Duffy Bookbinding' in Dublin for the craftsmanship employed in creating 'Flowlines'. Thanks Tom!
The square book design was based on geometric shapes used as patchwork patterns. Individual colours represented the individuality of the maker and their unique stories.
The Star of David cover design, comprises of many different shapes replicating patchwork patterns. The hexagon and six pointed star images, signify the seven patchwork makers that were interviewed and whose stories are featured in this publication.
Personalised colours represented the individuality of the contributors and their unique stories. Experimenting with scale produced the above result.
"It is more than just a sewing thing" was one of the quotes from the patchwork maker, in describing their unique sewing group. This was the inspiration for the title chapters explaining the above page design layout.
The 'Lockout in Dublin' in 1913 was represented typographically as it was by one of the patchwork makers. The image was locked into the page corner to further signify this event. The typographic brief allowed for explorations and experiments, that may otherwise not have come to fruition. It was an enlightening experience!
