PROBLEM
For this project, the client requested a re-design of the young-adult fiction book, “The Dark is Rising,” by Susan Cooper, including body copy layouts, illustrations and dust jacket design.
SOLUTION
I chose to approach the text design and illustrations in a way that highlighted the interplay of light and dark elements (a major theme in this story). In addition to laying out the navigation / body text and micro-typesetting the entire work, I also produced several ink and water illustrations which were included in the final print of the book.
This book design won an honorable mention at the 2012 PPN (Publishing Professionals Network) invitational book design competition - San Fransico, CA
