KENDRICK LAMAR ALRIGHT
UKIYO-E PROJECT
It all started with my love of the ancestral Japanese design and technique called Ukiyo-e or more commonly called engraved prints or woodblock prints. Everybody knows the infamous Hokusai's waves images. But there is way more to it as it represents a whole part of Japan's art history. I rediscovered the technique and how it's all made thanks to Jed Henry's Ukiyo-e Heroes project he made with Dave Bull (a woodprint engraver and printer). I got interested but couldn't really relate to the subjects they were working with. I decided to explore the techniques myself and apply it to the urban imagery I love notably one of the most striking video from Kendrick Lamar 'Alright'. I wanted to translate the energy and the vibe of one of the most influential artist of the decade. Hopefully I've done both the artist and the technique justice. Pretty happy about the result :) What do you think ?
