I Am Soldier
This project is a book I wrote, researched, designed and typeset. It is 78 pages long, and delves
into the life of the U.S. soldier told through the words and experiences of several different soldiers and soldier companies throughout the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. The book is designed to bring the viewer a feeling of connection and closeness to the soldiers whose lives and words they are experiencing.
I accomplished this by using the everyday objects and textures that would exist in their world to create the artwork; a two inch patch from a sleeve, a torn piece of canvas from a ruck sack, or the laces from worn pair of combat boots offer the only pictoral representations. Combined with hand made typography and illustrations, these elements inspire the subliminal senses of roughness, exhaustion and endurance that define the lives of these men. The following are examples of digital spreads, the first being the cover spread, and interspersed spreads which represent the rest of book.
