Catrinas in Alexander McQueen
"La Catrina" is a character developed by the Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada, followed by Diego Rivera who used it to illustrate in his mural paintings a critic to the Mexican aristocracy of the XXth Century.
"La Catrina" has become since then an internationally recognizable Mexican icon which represents death from a different perspective: a beautiful and elegant one, which can be found today from the most traditional Mexican crafts to international artistic makeup or costumes .
The distinctive feature of my work about this character is the anatomical investigation of human skeleton doing fashion model poses, because the catrinas I create appear modeling haut couture clothes from internationally known fashion design signatures, for the reason that "La Catrina" character was created using haut couture since it was a portrait of the business class.
With this project, my intention is to laud Mexican culture and international fashion at the same time. I also want to point out the elegant beauty of the skeleton with which all of us can feel identified, as it can transcend every shape and color of flesh and skin. We all have a skeleton underneath it all.
