The Bishops
Music at the 512
The Bishops are a rap group based in Austin. The group consists of Cara, Troy, and Chris, who are all brother and sister; Cara being the youngest and Chris the oldest. Over the course of a couple of months, I photographed their daily lives and musical process. This was my experience:
I took a deep breath in the apartment. The bedroom slash studio smelled like weed.
"Do you guys ever worry about the weed smell?" I said.
"Oh no." Cara chuckled. " We just open the window or whatever."
Cara reached over past her brother Troy's shoulder, grabbing the largest amount of weed I had seen in my whole life. Cara started licking some rolling paper, as Troy messed with the sound of paper crumpling and drums on his computer. They sat comfortably, until the phone rang. It was Chris, ready to be picked up from his shift at a restaurant, so that they could do their set at the Spider House: a restaurant slash performance area.
This scene repeated many times: weed, work, music...weed, work, music. Often, It was hard to tell when they were practicing for a song, working, or just having fun.
