'NOTJUSTUSELESS' Thesis by Katalin Huszár

Special Project: Japanese binding technique for Katalin Huszár's NOTJUSTUSELESS  thesis for her MA diploma project.
As she states " ‘notjustuseless’ is a project aiming to forward a message to ourselves as a consumer society. This design venture plays with the concept of recycling as we know it, bringing it back in a new, refreshing way. Its approach works by changing this dated, old-fashioned concept through interactively inviting the audience into the designing process, opening a door into a modern perspective and consciousness. "

In her thesis she researches the possiblities of pairing different materials, like natural fabrics with reused drinking straws, so we thought why not show it on the outside what is in the inside... She made an A4 sized piece of fused linen, drinking straws and plastic place mats to be bound with her thesis. The best and easiest technique was to make a japanese hardcover bound with separate face and back, covered with black artpaper and a subtle window on the front to make it straight forward what is waiting for you on the very first page. Engraving was made by Gravus.
