Liberate
York/Sheridan Design: Typography 3
Another one of my favourites from 2nd year. This time we were asked to design a poster based on a word. Just one word, and give it any meaning that we wanted. The poster was to use expressive type and optional imagery on the front and approximately 1000 words explaining the theme/word on the back. Both tasks were to challenge us with designing layouts for type on large posters.

The word given to me was "liberate", meaning "to set free, as from imprisonment or bondage". After messing around with a few concepts and ideas, I finally chose to design my poster on the theme of abuse. For the back of the poster, we were allowed to use text from another source (given the time restraints) as long as it was cited somewhere within the design. So Googling a bit, I found an "open-letter" type post by Piercarla Garusi, where she talked about how those suffering from abuse can take certain steps to "break free".

The front of the poster represents the urgency and desperation to escape.
The back represents the calm and clear thoughts of someone who has found their way out.

Final size was 24 by 36 inches.
