Biography:

Matthew Nolan Buday is currently studying for his Metalsmithing/Jewelry major at College for Creative Studies in Detroit Michigan. Before arriving at CCS, Matthew studied at St. Mary's Preparatory, a catholic private school in Orchard Lake, Michigan. This is where his interest in art began. With help of an extremely supportive teacher, always pushing Matt to create better work, Matt won a Gold Key award in the 2011 Scholastics Art and Writing Awards competition for one of his jewelry submissions. He then went on to receive a Silver Medal at the national level of the same competition. This earned him scholarships, and helped Matt choose his path, eventually leading him to CCS.
When Matt isn't at school he might be disc golfing or hitting the ski slopes with his friends, along with catching up with his family, and teaching his interested sister the many forms/techniques of art. Matt receives inspiration from the free forms of nature and expression. Upon leaving college, Matt plans to either open a collaborative art center/gallery in an area where children/young adults don't have the tools to create on their own, or be an independent Jewelry contractor. His goal is simple; to help others to excel in their own mediums of art (maybe just by giving them the tools and accessibility to do so)

Artist Statement:

As a Jeweler/Metalsmith I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of fine detail work, such as getting in all the small crevices, sanding and filing every inch of the metal to be smooth. Some would say it’s tedious, but every step adds to the greater picture, the finished piece, which is a great feeling in the end. Most of what I make is gallery piece jewelry. When designing and creating a piece, I usually like to incorporate colored plastic along with metal, as it’s very cost effective, eye-catching, and very easy to mold. My goal as a jeweler is to fabricate jewelry in a cost effective manner, so that gallery piece jewelry can be affordable to a wider range of public.
So far, everything I’ve learned has been mostly from four years of jewelry class in high school, where I had a very supportive teacher, and from a semester at CCS. When I work, you may find me in the metal shop at my school. For being so picky about fine detail with jewelry, you’d see the opposite in my workspace, which is odd, but I just work better that way.
