Times Square, New York City
Hired to design the interior and exterior of the old Victory Theater by the architectural firm of Hardy Holtzman Pfieffer, Nicholas Buccalo did just that. Besides working out the programmatic functions, including a back stage component on a site behind the theater, he suggested that the original architecture screamed for the return of its stoop which architecturally finished the building perfectly. Understanding that having a stoop occupy valuable sidewalk on 42nd Street, he quickly noted to the leaders of the city that as the first theater renovation for Times Square, adding the stoop would be a strong signal to other developers that the city was willing to do whatever it would take to make Times Square a new and welcoming place for everyone. Despite it's small size, the New Victory Theater had a great impact as Disney took over the Amsterdam Theater across the street soon after, and the David Letterman Show took over the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway to also help propel Times Square into the wonderful place it is today.
