This coat is made from heavyweight, workman's denim designed as a kimono-esque, oversize and boxy fit jacket. I strived to design a bold jacket that can improve with wear.
The machine embroidered design on the back that I illustrated is inspired by Japanese theatre Noh masks. Noh masks are carved from blocks of Japanese cypress, and painted with natural pigments. The word Noh means skill, craft, or the talent of performing arts. It is a classical tradition that is highly valued by many today.
My love with Kitsune is back! I wanted to create a multi-functional piece of clothing that could be worn as a dress or a jacket. Ethically printed ontn crisp cotton. This piece incorporates all mu favourite Kimono/Yukata-esque dreams into one simple item. It features a bold oversize fit, hidden seam pockets, an inner ribbon tie and and an outer tie that comes together on your left side. The print design is simple and incorporates imagery of kitsune (japanese foxes), the iconic japanese red sun and shapes from paper hangings that I saw at Shinto shrines during my travels in Japan.
Mizu literally translates from Japanese into "water". My trip to Japan last year still resonates with me. The japanese culture has such deep roots of respect for nature. Here I tried to delicately explores these notions.
