La Belle et La Bête

La Belle et la Bête
A brief to design promotional material for a theatre production of Beauty and the Beast. Instead of using the Disney adaptation, I wanted to focus on the traditional story. I chose to use La Belle et la Bête – a 1947 directed by filmmaker and poet Jean Cocteau – as my inspiration for the project. The film is more accurately based on the original fairy-tale, using beautiful gothic scenes and dreamlike cinematography to bring the story alive.
Theatre Programme
I designed a programme for the production using a preamble written by Cocteau shown at the beginning of the film.
I used ink illustrations, photography, woodcut prints, decorative illuminated capitals and a limited colour palate with the aim of creating an immersive journey through Cocteau’s gothic fairy-tale world. The programme is printed on textured paper with some pages on heavyweight coloured tracing paper. The tracing paper adds elegance and excitement to the design.
