Language Barrier/Encyclopedia of an Event/2018
Studio Project
Duration: 4 weeks

Project Brief
The idea is to gather  knowledge about one single event and make that accessible to the public in the form of an encyclopedia. I asked to pick up an event and then divided it into different sections, collecting references, documents and images, arranging them into a style, developing visual language and navigate system for the book.

Event Intro
Last semester. I was asked to write down a narrative about a speculative journey in studio class. We needed to use the narrative to be represented with different graphics items. I’m poor at writing, I try to put my thought into words, but I got a lot of grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes, and sentences weren't structured very well. I kept sending emails to class instructors and revise my narrative twice every week, I didn't want to fall behind the rest of my studio class. Stressed, anxiety and helplessness become my main emotions during the process. I feel my thought are separate from the English even though I tried to do it as perfect as l can.
Language Barrier
The book is called Language Barrier. Based on personal experience, I gathered information including memes, interviews from international students, relevant articles, google translation fails, spelling mistakes, communication mistakes, funny videos about the language barrier, etc.

The book is divided into four parts:
Introduction
When I'm writing
When I'm communicating
When I'm realized

The book uses three colors to navigate, yellow, red and black. Yellow to highlight important information and the color for the small pages which use translation form to represent emotion. Red represents the mistakes. Black for showing artifacts and chapter opener. Colorful images only for artifacts, black and white images with filter represent the recalled memories.

The book has a removable cover, which is a collection from the book.
