Syrian Children Dealing with Chronic Blood Disease

Dr. Loretta Itri is an experienced medical oncologist and pharmaceutical professional with a successful track record as a researcher and developer of innovative cancer drug treatments. Outside of her professional life, Dr. Loretta Itri is a longtime supporter of Doctors Without Borders, a relief organization that works to provide emergency medical aid in war-torn areas.

Doctors Without Borders recently reported that a large number of children in northeast Syria - a country in the midst of a civil war - suffer from thalassemia, a genetic blood disease that can cause chronic anemia and can be fatal if the children do not receive routine blood transfusions.

Unfortunately, Syria has sparse resources for this type of care, which is why Doctors Without Borders is calling upon the world community to step up and provide the equipment needed to perform the transfusions and specialists who can help provide care.
