City Branding: Shiraz, Iran

The historic city of Shiraz is located in the south of Iran and it’s referred to as the city of “Gol va Bolbol” which means, flower and nightingales. The flower gardens and the evergreen trees are popular throughout the country.
With thousands of years of history and tradition to be considered, the design intent was to re-introduce the city in a modern light. In order to rebrand the city, a logo along with a set of landmark icons were introduced to identify the various parts of the city. Geometric shapes along with vibrant colours were used to portrait the Persian architectures and the warm environment of the city. The logo is based on the city’s moniker, a flower and nightingale created using geometric shapes. Landmark icons were constructed using straight and curved lines surrounded by a green circle implying the city’s gardens. On the promotional front, a number of merchandise items were produced under the same design principles. In one instance, the word flower was calligraphed in Farsi which consisted of repetition and overlapping of words. The art may appear innovative to tourists who may be new to the art style. In another, a pattern was formed by the fallen petals from the logo which ties in with the shape and colour of Shiraz.
