Description
With increased number of channels and multiple remote controllers, the Channel Navigation and operation became extremely complex. During this project we wanted to identify the core issues and expectation and to develop a Mobile App which provides the user better watching experience and could eventually replace the conventional remote controller.
Research
We interviewed people on various age groups and identify the following core problems to be addressed.
Difficult to manage
1. Channels number are pre-defined and can’t be changed according to users wish. With 1000s of channel options it is very difficult for them to navigate between channels
2. Channel number are hard to remember. They are either 3 digits or 4 digits which are very hard for the user to remember.
3. Separate channel number for HD. Even those who subscribed to HD channels would usually Key in old channel number as a habit.
4. Most of them didn’t use channel guide. Many other common functions like program reminders, favorite channel etc are not know to most of the users.
5. Channel numbers are not same with every providers. Each one them has allocated their own numbers
Ads are annoying
Promo ads are placed on multiple locations which is not of user interest. Some users are highly annoyed because they paid for the set-top box and paying monthly subscription. They expects a premium service with ads free environment.
Remote Controllers are hard to use
Using two remotes for operation. TV remote to switch-on the TV and selecting the Input source, Set-Top Box remote to navigate the channels. Only Airtel provides a unified remote which works on both TV and Set-top box. Others are still providing the old IR remote which works only with Set-top box. It is a very painful experience to use two remote.
Ideation
To make an Remote Controller Application which would connect to the SetTop box via WiFi network. The SetTop can be directly controlled by the APP. User would see only the Channels for which they are accessible to them and priority changes realtime based on user interaction.
Design
We have create the interactive wireframes to get user feedback and using Adobe XD and run the test to user to understand if our ideation would work.
