トイレToire is an exploration from a westen point of view to the experience of going to the toilet in Japan.
This book is inspired by a little essay written by an old and angry Japanese man from the 1930’s, Junichiro Tanizaki.
He talked with so much passion about the traditional Japanese toilets and all the poetic concepts behind them. He also explains how was the experience in the past and how it changed to what is it now due to the influence of western culture and the introduction of new habits and customs from across the sea.
For us, the westeners, a toilet is something that is very far from beauty, it is even a tabu. We don’t care that much about the experience of it. We just want it to be easy to clean, so we don’t see further than functionality.
But the experience of going to the toilet is on another level in Japan. In the past you could see the wabi-sabi in its most expression where the wooden floors and walls had a beautiful patina of the time and you were sorrounded by the sounds and the smells of the rain because they used to be outdoors.
The beautiful experience of going to the toilet has changed a lot but there are still strong concepts behind it, not as poetic as they used to be but they are focused on the confort and satisfaction of the user besides the functionality and this is what makes them unique.
