DETROIT'S HIP-HOP MAYOR, KWAME
This student project was meant to be a comical expression or the political activities taking place in Detroit. The activity book is entirely based upon actual facts and events that occurred during the Ex-Mayor of Detroits time spent in office from 2002 to 2008. Once quoted saying that its the people who make a mayor, this books illustrations and activities allow for the viewer to discover and create their own interpretation of Detroits Hip Hop Mayor and his removal from office.
The cover illustration depicts Kwame and his mistress Christine. As they are the founders of "Sexting", this iconic pair lead the viewer through a story of corruption, lies, sex, parties, and deceit. The fairytale coloring book is a direct representation of how the press exploited and presented this story. As the actual events of his time in office are documented, the details remain fuzzy. This book of leads the viewer to an activity of creating their very own version of the story.
Each illustration within the activity book tells a piece of Kwame's story as mayor.
As his image was loved by some, and hated by many this activity book leaves it up to the viewer to discover their version of the story. The left illustration for example is a connect the dots activity. If the user connects the letters, Kwame puts on his hero mask; if the user traces the numbers, Kwame puts on his bandit hat.
Christine, Kwame's secretary and secret lover ultimately lead to the unveiling of his dark side to the public.
As he was removed from office and being hunted by the government, this spread illustrates his transition from Detroit to his new home in Dallas.
