A Small Step
May — 2018
A Small Step is a sculpture/ sound installation shown in the exhibition Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth, made by multimedia's fourth year students. Regarding the name of the exhibit, I took inspiration from a space theme, and decided to portray the overwhelming feeling of mystery every human being still experiences when faced with the unknown, like the mankind when it comes to space exploration, for example.

A long black plastic tube with a hidden mirror in the end emerges from a black surface with two steps craved in it. A soundtrack of transmissions between Earth and Apollo 11 during the moon landing can be heard coming from the piece. The viewer can climb the steps, look into the work, and meet his own reflection — even without knowing what to find, we tend to project ourselves into the unknown.
