Poster: Ann Arbor Film Festival
PBDS 751
This is one of two posters I designed during an online summer class. For this assignment, students had to choose a themed film festival and design a poster for it. Students also had to use the type/ image relationship of fusion, in which the type and image merge together (see my Morrissey Autobiography poster for another example).

This poster is for the Ann Arbor Film Festival. The Ann Arbor Film Festival is the oldest avant-garde and experimental film festival in North America. The six-day festival presents 40 programs with more than 180 films from over 20 countries of all lengths and genres, including experimental, animation, documentary, fiction, and performance-based works.

For this poster, I wanted to create something that conveyed the ideas behind an experimental festival and visually challenge the viewer. I understood that an experimental film festival allowed me to have more entropy within my poster, however I still needed it to be somewhat understandable. The type has a glitch effect that looks random but is actually following a very specific pattern that makes it look balanced and somewhat readable. The background features random images that I took over the course of designing the poster with an accidental long exposure shot overlaying the photos. If I was actually designing this poster for the AAFF, I would like to replace the background pictures with shots from the films that would be playing at the festival.
The best part of this poster is that it has an AR feature. If you download the Artivive app and point it at this poster (or watch the video above), The poster will start "glitching". I've been fascinated with AR since I saw it for the first time in Pokemon Go and I've aways wanted to create AR design. I will definitely be making more work in the future that utilizes AR, so stay tuned for that.
