Technical Jewelry Sketches
Thoughts on Paper
When composing a piece of jewelry through rendering, a seemingly endless array of factors and possibilities will arise.
Primarily the representation of an object must grove with-in our three dimensional universe. That combined with an adherence to the specific properties of the various materials that must be translate into all the visual components. These few irrevocable elements are necessary and essential for conversion into reality.
Over time, I have come to find that the materials, methods of construction and cost amongst many less necessary facets come into play. Obviously others must be considered too, including aspects like movement of the joints, any clasps, heft of its mass, textures, finishes, fashioning and mounting of the stones. One component that is easily over looked incorporates the collaborative nature and skills possessed by the many artisans who will work on the piece. All of these technicalities must be part of the sketches.
Remembering still, that typically these are highly personalized adornments. So working within the appropriateness of the relevant style and the clients considerations, demand that each object not only be held up to necessary practicalities of the physical and monitory realities, but so to someones expectations and feelings together with their realms of dreams and wishes.
As I move the pencil point, these factors play out in my mind. Ultimately all graphite lines and shapes dominate the paper but the completed work comes alive for me as I sketch-out ideas.
