Bad Boys | Typographical Poster

This project that began in mid January was based around the idea of designing a typographical poster that would help pay tribute to the 1995 action movie Bad Boys (starring American actors Will Smith and Martin Lawrence), by the way of a visual style that combines minimalism and simplicity together, in order to make an intentional reference to a certain piece of dialogue featured within the movie itself.

As you will see, the final outcome consists of both text and illustration elements that all-in-all remain formal but somewhat abstract, as made noticeable by their set size and alignment preferences. Regarding the intentional reference, the movie title has been displayed as an alternative form of said reference itself (the demand for a bag of skittles in the convenient store during a gun stand-off), hence all of the letters being displayed in the same way the letter ‘s’ is famously imprinted on the top of the skittle sweets themselves.

Other text-related content, such as the production credits and featured actors, have all been designed with a left and centre-aligned Swiss style, with the addition of various opacity levels and combined letter cases in order to help with asserting hierarchy, and easier legibility, as best as possible.

To push the overall depth of the design that little bit further, I decided to include lighting gradients alongside a grain texture in order to help push away from a look that I felt would appear far too flat, and way too polished for my own personal liking.

For the display mockup, the final outcome has been placed within a hanging-by-wired clips setting, with a background colour (dark orange) that has been sampled from the actual poster itself.
