I found that the best way to create round but nicely uneven bases for the trees would be to cut discs from logs, then gluing a wooden dowel through the middle so they could slot in and out of the set, creating room for manoeuvre.
wire frames tied round the wooden bases before using Papier-mâché to build up a surface. Using the wire also meant I could make the surface of the trees uneven by bending it around.
I collected real twigs to make up the branches.
A mixture of wood chippings, sand and soil were used for the floor of the forest.
I used different coloured flocks and lichen for modelling to cover the trees and give them a nice texture.
A background I created to replace the green screen used when shooting.
