Spark - The Fire Starting Ring

I began the process with a sticky note exercise that involved the creation of scenarios in which I could swap the user, function and location of a tool to help inspire the development of concept jewelry. Many of the thumbnails you see on the right of the screen are the product of this exercise.
I settled on creating a flint and steel inspired ring. Initially I planned on creating two separate rings one of which housed the magnesium strip and the other was intended to be a scraper that generated the spark.
As you can see here, I went through a few iterations of the prints, but after realizing that the magnesium strip could be sparked by almost any metal I decided to just produce the magnesium strip ring.
When it came to branding, I wanted to draw upon the shape of the ring. I made some sketches on paper and messed around with some fonts in illustrator. Ultimately, I settled on this logo. Because the target users for this product are campers and hikers, I wanted to incorporate an outdoorsy brand image with elements such as as a fire and some trees
This video provides a short and to the point example of how the product functions, and its intended use in nature.
The ring is available for purchase on Shapeways.com. The link to the product can be found just below.
