ZŁOM / ART FOOD - Ćmielów Porcelain Factory

ART FOOD project was initiated by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute as a part of an ongoing programme promoting polish design abroad. Two academies were chosen to participate: the School of Form in Poznań and the Royall College of Art. The aim of the project was to create a set of dishes for top restaurants. The project was curated by Marek Cecuła and took place in the Ćmielów Porcelain Factory in Poland.
The workers of the factory write “ZŁOM" on a scrap porcelain to distinguish trash from a perfect products.
I used the Ćmielów factory’s scrap porcelain to create the collection of plates. All the elements have been found in rubbish containers, carefully selected out of thousands of pieces and hand polished. My choices were based on my appreciation of the beauty of how porcelain breaks in unusual ways. I put a golden glaze on part of the pieces as I like the idea of combing such an expensive material with a trash. The elements are not fixed into the plate, but separate, so the chef can play with them and create his own sculptural arrangements.
