Realistic Vector Watch

Creating a Photo Realistic Vector Watch in Adobe Illustrator
by Casey Lundberg

This project has wiped me of all energy these past two weeks. Please enjoy my efforts and feel free to comment! I began by sketching parts of watches to get a feel for how parts fit together within a watch face and watch band.
Because I anticipated this project taking a lot of time, I decided to hit the ground running and get a good start in the first few days. The image below is my first draft, about a week's worth of work.
After receiving some feedback and putting in more hours, I revised my work and shared my second draft, pictured below, with my peers.
The number symbols alone took me two hours to create. I used so many radial gradients! Though I was able to make decent headway at the start of the project, there was a lot left to do even by the second draft. I spent 5+ hours trying to figure out how to mimic the watch band's texture. It took a lot of time and effort, but I was glad it turned out better than my first and second draft!

Most of the feedback I received throughout the process was to add more highlights and shadows. I spent a good amount of time carefully deciding opacity levels, and I primarily used radial gradients and Gaussian blur to create the illusion of lighting.
I decided to organize my layers panel by watch face, watch band and band attachments. My base layer throughout the project included my reference photo from Eone.  As the project progressed and there became a need for more separation, I added layers for specific objects like the watch's switch and timer (labeled buttons below).
The image on the left is the reference photo, and the image on the right is a screenshot of the finalized vector illustration.
