Chinese Diseases
A month before this work, there was a fire at an old tenement building where migrant workers lived in very cramped quarters in Beijing. However, the government took radical actions, and after calling these workers “inferior” publicly, they gave inhabitants two days to pack up their belongings before demolition began. I had a strong desire to make something relevant. The whole situation was like a blister that was going to burst sooner or later, and all these social issues are like diseases hiding beneath the skin. The idea of a blister was carried into my work.
