DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY
This video went through 4 different style revisions; each completely different than the last. Mostly, the music was to blame because there was no voiceover. Once we had the right music, and the right footage, it flowed.
The footage was from an event I shot in Houston, TX just to have the b-roll. It's ironic now that the event the footage ended up promoting is happening in Houston, TX.
There was a lot of motion tracking and matte work in this video. Although Mocha is wonderful for tracking objects, this footage wasn't shot with tracking in mind, so there was a lot of rotoscoping to do.
This sequence took the longest to rotoscope because of the fingers and foreground action.
For introducing the artists for the event, there was no footage of them, just still images. The lens flares help to create motion, but I needed just a little bit more. So I added a slight wiggle to the foreground plate and let the background blur. This is similar to the effect you get when you have something stuck on the front element of a lens when the electronic stabilization is turned on.
A lot of color correction and masking went on in this video as well. The original footage was all white tungsten lighting, but I wanted more of a concert feel. I blew out the highlights on the stage so you couldn't tell what is up there, and then added splashes of color on each of the lighting elements in order to make it look like those colors were being used. Same thing with the highlights on the people.
