T66 (Route 66 across the Texas Panhandle)

Tom R. Chambers traveled the "remains" of Route 66 across the Texas Panhandle ... East to West. This journey means a lot to him because he is a native Texan. He and his parents used to move and vacation along this route and also through the Midwest and West. He also grew up with the hit song, "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" and the "Route 66" television show in the 1960s.

This "Mother Road" ... as it is called ... still shows signs of its greatness along with the decadence because of the construction of the interstate (I40).

General Information:

U.S. Route 66 (US 66 or Route 66), also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. US 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year. The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in the United States, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). It was recognized in popular culture by both the hit song "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" and the "Route 66" television show in the 1960s.

Route 66 running across the Texas Panhandle:

Closely following Interstate 40, more than 150 miles of the original 178 miles of the old road still remain. The only sections of original Route 66 not available are between Jericho and Alanreed and Adrian to Glenrio. Otherwise, Route 66 still exists even with original concrete paving in many spots.
