Legend of Lake Singkarak, Indonesia

The Legend of Lake Singkarak
Sumatra, Indonesia

A long long time ago somewhere deep in Minangkabau highlands there was a boy called Indra. He was a good child. The only thing that worried his parents was their son's ravenous appetite.
But once a period of poor harvest came. "Father, I'm very hungry", Indra complained. "If you are hungry, try to find your food in the forest or at sea!" Exclaimed the father. "You are still a child, but you eat a lot."
Before leaving home, Indra fed his pet chicken Taduang. taduang was a smart chicken and very fond of his master.
Indra was searching for food all day long but had no luck neither in forest or at sea.
So he returned home, sad and even hungrier than before.
As he entered the house he saw his parents sleeping soundly in kitchen, with dinner plates, rice baskets and empty shells scattered around them.
The view filled Indra's heart with sadness. Seeing that, Taduang crowed loudly and flew in the air. Indra held onto Taduang's feet, taking with him the stone which attached itself to his legs.
The stone grew big and heavy and hit one of the hills. The impact formed an elongated hole. Quickly, sea water filled the hole and formed a stream which flew to a dry valley and created lake Singkarak.
