A Story To Remember: Aliwal Street Barber

ALIWAL STREET BARBER

While street barbers were once a common sight in Singapore's past, today only a few remain. I was inspired to share this story of a dying profession and sought out Mr Tan Boon Kee, who is one of the last street barbers operating in Aliwal Street. Engaging in a talk with him and seeing him operate allowed me to see his passion and how it became a part of his life story.

A STORY TO REMEMBER

Five photographs portray his daily operations and traditional methods, which differ much from today’s setting. Besides cutting hair, he also provides facial trimming services and operates his shop at 79 Aliwal St, Singapore 199949. In telling his story, I hope to offer the viewers a glimpse into Singapore’s traditional professions, and being able to remember it as part of Singapore’s past and identity.
